Role: behavior expected from someone who holds a particular role. Sciuto fills the role of friend when she forcibly prevents Agent Gibbs from running away from his problems and going to Mexico by handcuffing him to herself.

Achieved Status: social position a person takes on voluntarily that reflects personal ability and effort. Agent Gibbs' achieved status is being the leader of the NCIS agents.


Status: A social position that a person holds. DiNozzo would be considered an NCIS agent, male, and an adult. These are just a few of the statuses he holds.

Ascribed Status: A social position a person receives at birth or takes on involuntarily later in life. Gibbs' first wife was killed, thus leaving him a widow until he married his second wife.

Master Status: A status that has special importance for social identity, often shaping a person's entire life. Gibbs has devoted a large portion of his life to NCIS, and his career as an agent would be considered his master status.
