Criminal Justice System: the organizations--police, courts, and prison officials--that respond to alleged violations of the law. NCIS is part of the criminal justice system because they are a specialized segment of the military police.

Crimes Against the Person: crimes that direct violence or the threat of violence against others. The NCIS team deals solely with violent crimes, leaving the local police to handle everything else.

Stigma: A powerfully negative label that greatly changes a person's self-concept and social identity. Murderers are given a stigma when they are placed in jail, and it is a stigma that will never be removed from them.

Hate Crime: A criminal act against a person or a person's property by an offender motivated by racial or other bias. In the episode "Faith", a preacher who was killed is believed to be the victim of a hate crime.

Societal Protection: Rendering an offender incapable of further offenses temporarily or permanently through imprisonment or execution. In most episodes, the NCIS team manages to catch who is responsible for murder, and they get put behind bars. This provides social protection.
