Social Stratification: a system by which a society ranks categories of people in a hierarchy. Social stratification is apparent on NCIS through the ranking of the agents. Director Vance oversees Senior Special Agent Gibbs who oversees Special Agents DiNozzo, McGee, and David.

Meritocracy: social stratification based on personal merit. Vance and Gibbs rose to their positions of power based on their individual ability, not their social class.

Intergenerational Social Mobility: upward or downward social mobility of children in relation to their parents. DiNozzo's mother was wealthy, but died when he was eight, resulting in DiNozzo being cut off from her family's fortune and lowering his social class.

Social Mobility: A change in position within the social hierarchy. McGee is promoted from a Junior Agent to a Special agent as he stays on the NCIS team.

White-Collar Occupations: Higher-prestige jobs that involve mostly mental activity. A job as an NCIS agent is considered a highly mental, highly-prestiged job then any blue-collar jobs.

Wealth: The total value of money and other assets, minus outstanding debts. DiNozzo comes from a very wealthy family (most of it coming from his mother).
