Tertiary Sector: the part of the economy that involves services rather than goods. The NCIS team falls in this sector because they provide the service of protecting society, rather than any physical good.

Politics: the social institution that distributes power, sets a society's goals, and makes decisions. NCIS distributes power among the hierarchy in an effort to solve cases faster and those that are higher up make the decisions for those beneath them.

Authority: power that people perceive as legitimate rather than coercive. Director Vance has authority over the other members of the team due to his title of director. He's earned the title and therefore the authority.

Profession: A prestigious white-collar occupation that requires extensive formal education. All of the agents of NCIS underwent formal training for their jobs that makes them very specialized in their professions.

Power: The ability to achieve desired ends despite the political life of a society. NCIS uses its power as a government agency to gather clues they might have otherwise been unable to obtain.

Government: A formal organization that directs the political life of a society. NCIS is in and of itself a part of the navy, which is a branch of the U.S. government's military.
